Electric Vehicles

Many if not all Oakwood citizens are concerned about the direction the climate is taking and are keen to reduce their personal carbon footprints. As the EPA reports that transportation contributes 27% to the total of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions (Sources of Greenhouse Emissions), one of the many ways citizens can reduce their emission of tailpipe carbon monoxide (a greenhouse gas) is by replacing, over time, their Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles with plug-in electric vehicles (EVs). This webpage helps inform our citizens about EVs and their associated issues.

Electric Cars Pros and Cons

It’s important to know the pros and cons of driving an electric car versus an ICE vehicle. This website gives a nice summary for you to help decision-making.

Are Always Greener? Could Get Greener?

Some folks say that they’ve heard EVs may not exude CO2, but over their lifetime (from pre-manufacture through scrapping) their carbon footprint is bigger than a similar sized and gasoline-powered vehicle. This VERY comprehensive article from a journalist in the Netherlands refutes that argument.

This webpage from the Union of Concerned Scientists helps you see how much less carbon pollution electric cars produce compared to gasoline-powered ones. Just enter your ZIP code to see the difference.

Making the Switch

Drive Electric Ohio

Clean Fuels Ohio (CFO) has developed the Drive Electric Ohio program to help Ohio residents appreciate the benefits of EVs by arranging through a network of volunteers ride and drive events throughout the state. This allows residents, who have probably never seen, touched or ridden in a plug-in EV to enjoy the experience with the help of an enthusiastic EV owner or of a non-pressurizing local auto dealership that has an EV in its inventory.

Where To Charge Your EV

There are thousands of charging stations in the USA and across the world to charge an electric vehicle. Here are some websites and associated mobile phone apps that show where those charging stations are located.

Sources of Electricity

Some say that the ‘tailpipe’ of a zero-emission plug-in electric vehicle is the chimney stack at your local power station. That is why it is so important that citizens take care to ensure that their local electricity power supply company uses renewable energy sources to the extent possible. These efforts should include pressing their power company to move from coal energy to cleaner energy such as natural gas or renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. Dayton Power & Light customers can ensure they are contributing to maximizing DP&L’s use of renewable power by switching their source to Clean Choice Energy.
